Here’s what to look out for at SIBOS 2019

Industry conferences provide an excellent opportunity to network with your peers, pick up on fresh ideas in your field or to showcase your expertise to prospective clients. In the finance and banking sector few events match up to the potential of SWIFT’s annual SIBOS conference.

Last held in Sydney, SIBOS is coming to London in 2019, from 23 to 26 September. It promises to be another bumper event, with nearly 200 exhibitors and over 9,000 visitors. EastNets will, of course, be attending SIBOS in London and we expect it to be another hugely influential event.

Hyper-connectedness: this year’s SIBOS conference theme

The 2019 SIBOS conference will be opened by the Director of the London School of Economics, Dame Minouche Shafik. Conference organisers SWIFT chose “Thriving in a hyper-connected world” as the overriding theme for the 2019 SIBOS event.

SIBOS 2019 will therefore focus on how increasing digitalisation and the growing importance of data impacts the world of finance and banking – and how organisations can adapt to the changing landscape. This interconnectedness and the data-first approach of digitalisation has cybersecurity implications too, which is why one of the five sub-themes of SIBOS 2019 concentrates on cyber-security threats.

What’s new at SIBOS 2019?

Novel and interactive initiatives have always been a big SIBOS draw. 2019 is no different as the conference promises to connect delegates with the latest in fintech, security and compliance. Indeed, one new initiative for 2019 is called Fintech Focus which intends to bring delegates closer to the latest developments in AI, machine learning and blockchain.

The organisers are also concentrating on bringing the everyday experiences of CXO staff into the conversation, thanks to a new conference series called Views from the Top with speakers including António Horta-Osório, CEO of Lloyds Banking Group and London Stock Exchange Group CEO, David Schwimmer.

Senior leaders will also contribute to Talent Thursday which aims to connect today’s promising talent with their more experienced counterparts. Alongside targeted conferences sessions Talent Thursday also offers a unique networking event – including an escape room challenge.

SIBOS 2019 sessions to watch out for

Our readers will be particularly interested in the compliance and security-related conference tracks at SIBOS. Several conference sessions promise to offer valuable insights into topics that are increasingly front and centre for financial institutions around the world. Some of our top picks include:

  • In “Ahead of the game: outpacing the fraudsters” participants can look forward to insights that will help them stay ahead of institutional payment fraud. The session promises to discuss risk reduction strategies including new processes, technology and enablement programmes.

  • It’s becoming increasingly apparent that real time payments pose compliance problems and in “Opposing forces: How banks are aligning compliance needs with real-time payments” speakers from NatWest, Standard Chartered and Open Banking will discuss the conflicts between a smooth customer experience and risk and regulatory controls.

  • Agile business approaches have proven their worth, and in “Agile: managing risk at a faster pace” Douglas MacEwan, head of AML Solutions at RBS will discuss how an agile approach to fighting financial crime can help institutions keep up to date with the moving compliance landscape.

  • Can cutting-edge AI technology transform compliance? We know it can and we encourage you to join SEB, HSBC and Ernst and Young in a discussion titled “Embracing artificial intelligence: how is AI augmenting compliance practices?” to explore the practical applications of AI in the compliance space.

The full SIBOS 2019 programme is available here, we think the program is definitely worth a close look.

EastNets at SIBOS 2019

In 2019 EastNets will be building on our SIBOS 2018 presence. Last year, we revealed our new AI-based solution for preventing payment fraud and money laundering, SafeWatch PaymentGuard (ENPG). In 2018 EastNets also presented a popular session on trade compliance.

This year visitors can look forward to an open theatre presentation on the 24th of September, titled "What went wrong when your bank was hacked? EastNets Investigations and conclusions on recent fraud cases.”

EastNets will also host a cocktail reception on the evening of the 24th, where industry participants can network with peers and influencers – spaces are limited, registration is recommended.

All delegates are of course welcome to visit the EastNets stand at SIBOS London. We’re located at stand number L138 and EastNets representatives will gladly discuss current issues around KYC, AML and the increasingly nefarious fraud and hacking landscape – and how EastNets can help keep your institution safe. We look forward to meeting you at SIBOS 2019.
